Goddess Akhilanda – a Goddess that tells us we are 'never not broken'

Posted by Christina Zipperlen on

Legend says that the Goddess Akhilanda, also known as Akhilandeshwari appeared during a time of chaos and despair in the universe.

However, the birth story of Akhilanda is not explicitly detailed in traditional Hindu texts like other deities’ stories. However, her essence and symbolism arise from her name, Akhilanda, meaning “The Goddess Who Is Never Not Broken”.

The Story of Akhilanda

The story of Goddess Akhilanda originates from Hindu mythology. Her name means “She Who Is Never Not Broken,” symbolizing the divine power in embracing imperfection and transformation.

Akhilanda is a manifestation of Parvati, the universal mother, the goddess of strength and resilience. Unlike most deities, she is depicted riding an alligator, an unusual mount symbolizing fear, instability, and the trials of life. Rather than avoiding these forces, Akhilanda uses them to propel herself forward. She thrives in brokenness, teaching that vulnerability and fragmentation are not weaknesses but opportunities for growth.

Akhilanda is believed to have manifested during a time of cosmic imbalance and turmoil. Her birth was not a traditional event but more a response to the universe’s need for a force that could teach beings to transform pain into strength. She emerged as a deity who thrives in chaos, riding an alligator – symbolizing fear and unpredictability – to show that even in the most turbulent of times, one can find stability and growth by surrendering to the divine flow.

Instead of restoring order through control, she embodied the fragmented state of existence, showing that healing comes from embracing life’s uncertainties. Her shattered form represents the infinite ways we can rebuild ourselves.

Through Akhilanda, we get to learn to embrace our struggles, seeing them as stepping stones to transformation. Her story reminds us that it is in our brokenness that we find our deepest strength and divine potential. By riding the alligator, she teaches that when we face our fears and use them as a guide, we discover our true selves.

Her existence teaches that life’s trials and fragmented experiences are sacred, serving as the foundation for spiritual evolution. Akhilanda, in essence, was “born” from the collective need for a deity to guide beings through their brokenness toward wholeness, making her both timeless and eternally relevant.
