The art of jewelry making – a visit to Ananda Soul's silversmiths

Posted by Christina Zipperlen on

Much of the magic that goes into our jewelry takes place in the small village of Celuk in the Gianyar region of Bali. Celuk is known as the jewelry mecca of Bali, with a long history of skilled silversmiths.

These silversmiths have been passing down their craft from generation to generation. It is there, in Celuk, in a small family compound, where our artisans create and refine each piece by hand, infusing it with the love, beauty, and spirit of Bali.

A story of traditional craftsmanship

These artisans possess a rich heritage of jewelry-making that has been passed down through many generations. Many silversmiths in Bali can trace their roots back to the Majapahit Empire in the 13th century and still use traditional methods to create unique and intricate jewelry pieces.

In Bali, metal smiths are known as Pandai, a term that translates as both smith and clever. In legends in the area, the first goldsmith clans were taught their craft by the gods that were sent to earth to teach humankind civil behavior.

Our partnership with these silversmiths helps preserve this traditional art form and produces timeless and meaningful pieces that are not only beautiful but also honor the natural world. This is something we are incredibly proud of.

Ananda Soul Jewelery is crafted at two production sites in Bali – one site is in Denpasar for the wax making, casting and plating process. It is in the little family compound in Celuk though, where the true magic – the embellishment and the assembly by hand – happens.

A Visit in Celuk

We went to visit Wayan, Putu, Zamroni and Abdul Karim in Celuk and sat down to speak with them.

It is a wonder to witness these four in their art. The atmosphere is calm, humble, almost mystical, for we know what is being created here has meaning and purpose - not only for the ones that will get to wear the jewelry, but also for the ones creating it.

Each piece of jewelry is a celebration of the intricate artistry, spiritual energy, and loving care that goes into creating it. And we hope you can feel it, when you wear your favourite Ananda Soul piece.

With love from Bali
