Aligning with The Moon’s Phases

to Master Your Own Energy

Posted by Christina Zipperlen on April 27, 2026

If you are human, chances are there are times when you feel clear, energized, and in motion.
And others when everything slows, softens, or asks you to pause.

And yet, we live in a time where this is rarely honored.
We are taught to move the same way every day.
To be productive. Outgoing. Radiant. Constant.

But has it always been this way?

This imbalance shows up everywhere.
Women disconnected from their own cycles.
Aging seen as something to resist.
Postpartum framed as something to “bounce back” from.
Where else do you notice it?

For thousands of years, across cultures and continents, people have lived in relationship with the moon.
They planted, harvested, rested, celebrated, and began again in rhythm with her phases.
Not as something mystical or far away, but as a natural part of how life moved.

Today, most of us live by calendars, notifications, and deadlines.

But let me ask you something simple.

Ask yourself honestly, without judgment:
Do you know what phase the moon is in right now?

And more importantly, would you know what that might mean for you?

The moon moves through a continuous cycle of expansion and return, light and dark, action and rest.

When you begin to notice her rhythm, something shifts.

You may start to understand your own energy differently.
The days you feel clear and in motion.
The days you need to pull back, soften, or begin again.

Working with the moon is not about adding something new to your life.
It is about remembering a rhythm that has always been there.

What might shift if you began to see your life through cycles instead of consistency?

If you feel curious, you can begin by discovering the phase of the moon you were born under, and noticing how that energy may already be moving through you.

Opening Our Awareness

Taking 29.5 days to complete her cycle, the moon marks time in a way our weekly planners and Google calendars simply cannot. As we open to her subtle shifts, her expansion and return, we begin to recognize our own cyclical nature, and the energy within us that rises and falls.

Awareness grows in small, simple moments of attention. When was the last time you looked up, scanned the sky, and followed the constellations moving slowly above you?

There were years where I only took notice of Full Moon and New Moon nights. To call in. To let go. Nothing wrong with that but there is something about noticing the subtleties of transitions.

Here’s a little invitation: Starting with the next Full Moon (dates are below), take five minutes each night to observe what’s above you. And if you can’t see it, close your eyes. Imagine. Notice the theme of the day. Watch the moon’s fullness gently wane, night after night, and notice how she remains, whether bright or hidden.

The tides, the menstrual cycle, and many of nature’s patterns follow this rhythm. To notice the moon is to remember your place within it. You, too, are part of this living world.

Feeling Into the Moon Phases

Once you begin to see the phases, you may start to feel them too. Notice where your energy is asking to rise, and where it is asking to soften.

Let’s move closer to each of the moon’s four phases.

New Moon

The New Moon is when the moon is not illuminated by the sun. The sky is dark, like fertile soil. This is where seeds are planted.

Light a candle. Sit in the dark for a moment longer than feels comfortable.
Ask yourself: What is ready to begin, even if I cannot yet see it?

If you wish to strengthen this energy in your life, you might choose a piece that holds this intention close, something you return to as your seeds take root.

If you were born under a New Moon, you may carry this energy of soft beginnings within you, again and again throughout your life.

Waxing Crescent Moon

Light slowly returns. The crescent grows, and with it, your energy. This is a time for movement, for taking aligned steps toward what you began.

Choose one small action that honors your intention.
Not everything. Just one step that says: I am in motion.

If you were born under a Waxing Crescent Moon, you may often feel a natural pull toward growth and expansion.
This is the phase of becoming, of trusting that what is building within you is enough.

First Quarter Moon

The light is growing, halfway between a New Moon and a Full Moon. This is a time of action and opportunity, of impulse and possibility.

Make a list of the best possible outcomes.

Feel the excitement of possibility, and let it fuel your intention.

Those born under a First Quarter Moon are builders, pioneers, and natural leaders. They have the ability to see potential where others don't and are confident in taking risks.

Waxing Gibbous Moon

Just before the Full Moon, this is a time brimming with potential, ideas and opportunity.

Dance. Draw. Dream. Find yourself in a flow state.

In these open spaces, clarity comes.

Those born under a Waxing Gibbous Moon don’t just like to get things done, they also like to do them well. They are driven by perfection, but this compulsion can be debilitating. They are known to be caring, nurturing, and calming to others.

Full Moon

The Full Moon is the peak of the cycle. Fully illuminated, it brings clarity to what has been set in motion.

Step outside if you can. Let the light touch your skin. Write down what feels complete, and what you are ready to release.

Those born under a Full Moon may feel things deeply, see clearly, and live close to intensity and truth. A piece that reflects this energy can become something you reach for when life feels at its brightest, or most overwhelming.

Waning Gibbous Moon

Just after the Full Moon, as the light begins to dissipate. It is a time of wisdom, awareness and sharing.

Journal about one lesson you have learned and one triumph you have experienced.

Let the reflection serve as satisfaction and closure.

Those born under a Waning Gibbous Moon possess a natural ability to dissect experiences and learn from them. They are born mentors and teachers, but must also be mindful of their knowledge and learn to trust their inner knowing.

Last Quarter Moon

The moon is waning in her light, she appears as the half moon. It is a time of empathy, identity and transition.

Take something away instead of adding more.A commitment, a habit, a thought.Let space do the work.

Those born under a Last Quarter Moon are deeply empathetic and intuitive, and attuned to what needs to be surrendered so that the new can emerge. They have an ability to just be there for others. However, they also have a tendency to love and cherish the past which can blind them to the joys of the present.

Waning Crescent Moon

The very last phase, where the Moon is nearing the completion of its cycle, is nearly dark. It is a time of imagination, spirituality and deep rest. A time to turn inward.

A Note on Fullness

Full does not mean whole.

The moon, and you, are always whole, in every phase of your life.

If you feel called, take a moment to discover your own moon phase, and begin to notice how it lives within you.

When the pressure to be fully illuminated at all times begins to creep in, from work, from others, from the world around you, return your gaze to the night sky.

Remember that reflection, replenishment, and quiet, potential-filled spaces are part of a healthy cycle.

Like the moon, like nature, you are welcome here in all of your phases.

Tonight, if you remember, step outside.
Look up.
Not to understand, but simply to be in relationship with the magical powers around you.
