THE BALINESE OM
But what is the Balinese OM?
Simply put, it is a symbol of devotion. It carries within its sound and symbolism the divine triad of Agama Hindu Dharma, the distinct form of Hinduism practiced in Bali.
When spoken or chanted, the sound unfolds into three parts:
A – U – M
These three vibrations correspond to the divine triad itself: Brahma, the creator; Vishnu, the preserver; and Siwa, the transformer. Together, they represent the balance and interconnectedness of all things: the divine, nature and humanity.
The OM is ever-present in Balinese life. It can be heard in daily prayers floating through the streets alongside the sound of ceremonial bells, and in the familiar greeting Om Swastiastu, an invocation of peace, safety and divine blessing.
It is both formal and familiar, devotional and woven into the everyday. The closeness of the divine on this island is tangible, intentional and continually honored.
